Hole in my chest

by Guilty By Design   Apr 22, 2022

How do you explain death to a child?
Eight years aged, six at your service
Old enough to read “in loving memory”
Full of questions, it makes me nervous
“I haven’t seen him in a while”
It was then that I felt my heart sink
“Do you still talk to him?”
Caught off-guard, scrambling, I had to rethink
“I miss him” – so innocent, so confused
Cancer is far too much to explain, so I said
“We’ll see him again someday”
The moment he puts 2 & 2 together, I dread.
