Deserted

I walk a lonely path
That once was shared with you
I pretend to hear your foot steps
Because you follow too

You loved it in the forest
And would always tag behind
But often you would pause
At all the things you'd find

And I would smile while walking
From times I'd turn around
To see you so absorbed
At all the things you found

Back then I kept on walking
Though soon our paths would meet
I always heard your rustling
With your tiny feet

Today my steps are slow
I'm no longer in a rush
I listen for your footsteps
But all I hear is hush

Now I won't turn around
Because I can't bare to see
That you've become absorbed
With someone that's not me

And no matter where I go
I listen for your feet
But I never hear the rustling
While they're on concrete

So I still walk in the forest
And pretend that you are near
When I'm forced to turn around
You just disappear

Because I was always selfish
To walk right by your side
You took another pathway
And with it took my pride
