One of Those Days

by Walter   Mar 25, 2023

I'm running late
I need to go
But there's a reason
Why I'm so slow

I lost my keys
I don't know how
On the hook
They should be now

I've looked twice
Three times in fact
And all my steps
I now retract

Behind the door
When I walked in
This is where
I now begin

I used them to
Unlock the door
I had them then
This much I'm sure

When I came through
I held them tight
Then hung them up
In plain sight

But now they're gone
They should be there
All of my keys
Including spares

My door now stays
Permanently shut
As I can't even get
Some more keys cut

And then I hear
My door unlock
It begins to open
And I'm in shock

It's my neighbour
At her I stare
She has my keys
I'm now aware

I just look at her
Like I have doubt
But she's just smiling
And worked it out

"I wondered why
You've not yet gone
You normally leave
First light of dawn

But on your door
Your keys hang there
Looking through the window
You're in despair"

I smiled back
And thanked her too
Then said promising
"I'll make it up to you!"

I grabbed my keys
And then ran out
Straight to my car
When I heard her shout

"You better not leave
And come back here
Or all your goods
Will disappear!"

I'm so flustered
And gone cross-eyed
I left my front door
Open wide

I invite her in
I need a fix
Because my mind is
Playing ticks

I offer her a coffee
Which she accepts
But before coming in
She points down my steps

"I'll make the coffee"
She says with a grin
"As your mind seems
To be in a spin"

"As now your car door
Isn't closed
You seem to be up to
Your elbows!"

I take her advice
To do as she said
But wish this morning
That I stayed in bed...

Interesting poem. Can picture the conversation and exchange. But is this fact or fiction?
