Wasted Heart (sonnet)

by Kitty Cat Lady   Jul 31, 2023

You heard a haunting siren calling you,
A symphony ethereal and pure,
You fell like moon to earth as young men do,
Despite only her voice thus far that lured.

And as you watched her emerge from the dark,
Even her shadow cast a sight so rare,
And when the dappled light revealed its mark,
Her beauty caused you nothing but despair.

For you could never have this muse to hold,
Unto another world she did belong,
Your heart forever would be unconsoled,
A lifetime wasted listening for her song.

The heart decides alone who you'll adore,
You'll want what you cannot have all the more.

Sirens and unrequited love have all the tragic and classical elements sonnets lend themselves to. You do the form proud here, Kitty.
