Loose Change

by Walter   Sep 26, 2025

I still have that coin you gave me
Which was just loose change
From the money I gave you
When you went to buy us drinks

I don't know why I kept it
Or why it has any significant meaning
As the coin was always mine
Perhaps I thought you'd keep it

It's funny how I don't even remember
The drinks that you bought us
Even when I said, "Surprise me,"
When you asked what I wanted

I just remember that I liked it
And it wasn't something that I normally get
I was certain that I would order it again
But I never did

And I don't know why it is
That I miss this night the most
When I think about you now
Since we're not together anymore

All our years that we shared
Certainly do tell a story
But when thinking back about it now
They started with that night

The coin's so much more valuable to me
Than just its face value
And maybe this is the reason why
I could never let it go

Perhaps it reminds me of "us"
Or maybe it just reminds me of you
Because it's one of a kind
Despite millions in circulation

I treasure that night so much
The memories always make me smile
And I know the saying that money can't buy love
But just possibly, your generosity did
