The pavement led you to my house.
Washed grey roads and gravel crunching under tires-
We’d both made the drive on the same road too many times to count,
I wanted to do it for the rest of my life.
And we walked from your car and cut over the pavement of the basketball court-
Steps echoing in the night air under ‘How was your day?’s and ‘I missed you’s,
I felt the warmth radiating off of you and almost latched on.
Maybe if I had we would’ve taken the grass instead.
There’s not a place in here now that I don’t see you-
Grocery stores.
Restaurants.
Parks.
The whole town is covered in Halloween decorations with your name on them.
I map the different roads we could’ve taken until I end up in a cemetery-
Smeared mascara and heavy breathing,
I search for you among the tombstones but I know it’s no use.
You’re still on the pavement that used to lead you to my house.
