Dear Firefly

Oh firefly
Flying in the night sky
Tail lit bright
You are quite a sight

Lost in your beauty
Basking in the cover of night
I admire you
And feel an unexplainable closeness

I reach out my hands
To capture you inside them
Then I stretch one out
And let you rest upon it

Oh firefly
Flying in the night sky
Tail lit bright
You remind me so much of me

For just like you I am lost
Flying solo, all alone
Blindly searching the night sky
Beacon lit, hoping to find my mate

You rest there on my hand
Waiting for fate to intervene
For your mate to fly your way
Attracted by your beacon

But lady luck doesn’t seem
To be on your side tonight
And so, for the moment
We both sit here broken-hearted, waiting

But unlike me
You fly free
To go and make things happen for you
Instead of just sitting here all blue

It’s in this moment I admire you
I admire your strength
The courage found in one so little
That can’t be found in me

It’s as I try
To snatch you back
That you remind me of the one I love
Just sitting there, hovering just out of reach

If I could catch you I would keep you close
I’d keep you right there in my pocket
Or maybe I would keep your likeness
Around my neck inside a locket

I would treat you good
With all the love I have to give
I would try my best to protect you
If only I could catch you

If only you would give me a chance
Instead of hovering just out of reach
I make one last grab to try and catch you
And at last I do succeed

But woe is me
It cannot be
I never meant for you to die
But I have killed you my dear firefly

And still we two are alike
As we both lie here crushed
Still both hoping to find
The one we call our mate
