Excuse Me for Loving You

by Michael D Nalley   Sep 6, 2004

Do I need an excuse for loving you?
After all the abuse love has been through
Loves, meaning is understood by a few,
Looking for a love that is pure and true

So many think love, is A four letter word.'
The nastiest word that they have ever heard
Then Eros and Venus, by many, are mocked and slurred
Speaking of Matrimony as if it were absurd

For those that attempt to direct ‘ Love's course,
Or control their beloved with too much force
Offending their spouse without any remorse
May find a marriage that ends in divorce

Then there are many who like to pretend
Their love seeks not to control or offend
The freedom of their lover, mother, child or friend
Unconditional love is so hard to extend

Is it, love of neighbor we have to redefine?
When we have to put our required love on the line
To obey the second commandment that is so fine
The golden rule, is a rule that is from the Divine

If I don't put love through abuse
I don't need to make an excuse
For loving anyone at all
I'm just answering a call

I know there are different kinds of love
Like the kinds that C. S. Lewis speaks of
The supernatural love between man and the Holy One above
In the unity of the Holy Spirit symbolized by the dove

Then there is the love between parents and their offspring
This kind of love that nurtures, is a natural thing
Then there is the love Eros may bring
Any kind of love makes my heart sing

Have you ever felt cheated, have you ever felt used?
Have you ever loved someone but felt love was abused?
How can we justify loving someone,
After all of the bad deeds that they have done?

Is it any wonder, most think love must be justified?
And if we do love, we must be unjustly crucified
If you think all that is said about love is true
Then excuse me for loving sinners like you
