Our Final Kiss

I slowly shook my head
And from you I turned away
You gently touched my arm
And pleaded with me to stay.

Tears tried to fall
As my eyes studied the ground
But your hand remained on my arm
Neither of us made a sound.

"I have to go."
I quietly muttered
I began to turn and leave
At a loss for words you simply stuttered.

I'd been hurt so many times before
But leaving you was so hard to do
Because, although you didn't know it
I wanted to be with you, too.

All of the boys who'd broken my heart
Had made breaking up seem so effortless
When it was - in reality
Only an add to the stress.

You tried to call out to me
To tell me to wait
But I only held back tears
Hoping that our parting wouldn't lead to hate.

"I'm so sorry."
I whispered, as I tried to leave
But as I went to get into my truck
You grabbed my sleeve.

"Please," you begged.
"Kate, don't go."
I looked into your eyes
And told you that it had to be so.

"I don't know what to do without you."
You replied
"I love you more than I've ever loved anyone."
You were telling the truth - I would've known if you'd lied.

I sighed softly
And looked at you
Knowing I'd never been with anyone
Whose love for me was so true.

For one last time
I placed my hand on the side of your face
And for a final time we kissed
It was a moment that we can never replace.

Out of everything we had
One thing I'll miss
Was the way you whispered, "I love you."
After our final kiss.
