Old Memories

by Hannah Leigh Pate   Dec 7, 2004

I would like to dedicate this to my little sister, Bailey, who recently turned twelve.

How long ago was it when you were my new baby sister?
How long ago was it when we last had Jody as a babysitter?
Was it nearly a decade ago?
Are we growing to be that old?

Do you remember when you had broken your fragile little wrist?
Do you remember Santa always got us everything on our list?
Do you remember how we would always fight?
But, apologize saying, “I love you and goodnight.”

How about when mommy and daddy divorced;
Or when Sami left and never came home?
These are just old memories of mine, an odd sort,
Which are most forgotten or left untold.

When was it we stopped calling Jake “Bubby”;
Or when we’d play dress up with Dani and Beezie;
Or when we’d play house, and Coda be the hubby;
Or when we’d all call you “Boo-bear” and not Bailey?

Do you recall such wonderful memories?
Do you wish to forget them all instead?
Do you visit all these memories regularly?
But, are such memories still in your head?

All names that are used here are family nicknames, except for Coda, which is our dog.
