A Single White Rose

A single white rose is all I have
To remember your last depart
Even though tears will eventually cease
You’ll always be in my heart

A single white rose from your grave
A flower so pure and white
I know I’ve got to try and be brave
But I cry for you every night

I can’t believe you’re gone forever
I can’t believe that you’re dead
I can’t believe you’re no longer here
But resting in heaven instead

Day after day I’m falling apart
This pain won’t seem to cease
I can’t believe I just said my goodbye
And those words ‘Rest in peace’

I’m trying to keep this rose alive
But I know that soon it’ll wilt
Even though I know you’re gone
Inside I feel some guilt

I wish I had seen you more before
You became so very ill
I should have realised it would be soon
When you wrote your will

I should have come down that afternoon
When you fell to the ground
If only I had been there that day
Then maybe you would have been found

Maybe I could have stopped your fall
Put my body in the way
Maybe then you’d be alive now
And not buried yesterday

This rose is the very last part of you
That I can truly hold
When I went to see you in the chapel
I didn’t know you’d feel so cold

I held your hand for the very last time
No one else dared to go
Your eyes were closed, you looked in peace
Not full of pain and woe

I thought there might just be a chance
That you would hear my words
As I said my final goodbye
I wished my love to be heard

What I would do just to have one minute
To tell you how I feel
To tell you I love you, and always will
To show you my love is real

To thank you for being part of my life
Kiss your cheek and hold you near
To tell you that I’ll never forget you
That I’m lost without you here

But I guess I’ll never get that chance
So I keep this rose alive
And even when it wilts and dies
I know my love will survive
