An Empty Chair

by Lindsay C   Apr 27, 2005

As my name is being called and the diploma placed in my hand,

All I can think about is you and I just can't understand.

You had your whole life ahead of you, so much left yet to do.

But now you've left behind all those who love and miss you.

We were the best of friends, our lives were just like clay.

Molded together through the years, we dreamt about this day.

We've known each other since pre-school and swore we'd never part.

But now I am standing on this stage with an broken, aching heart.

I pause and think of you and about that awful day,

You were going to fast, the curve was too sharp, and then the angels took you away.

A single tear falls down my cheek as I think of how much I want you there,

As I look out into the crowd and see your empty chair.
