Dance of Life

by DeludedHonesty   Jun 13, 2005

On life's stage I twirl,
Gracefully leaping and stretching,
Showing off my strengths,
While cleverly hiding,
My weaknesses.

I dance across the stage with power,
Loving the feeling of the familiar rush,
My costume sparkles and I smile,
Trying to draw attention,
To myself.

A new dancer comes on stage,
Dancing a dance all her own,
Others stare at her in disgust,
While I look on,
With interest.

The music picks up and I dance again,
My feet slide into the familiar steps,
I sway with the group,
Always smiling,
Always sparkling.

This time I feel no rush,
No one is watching me,
They are all watching that girl,
That girl who stole,
The spotlight.

I glance in her direction,
Dancing all the while,
I want to know what makes her,
The center of attention.

As if sensing my gaze she turns her head,
And gives me a long slow wink,
On her face is a mysterious smile,
And only now,
I understand.

I summon my courage,
And break away from the group,
I can't stand out if everyone,
Is doing the same,
Thing.

I make up a new dance,
Twirl, leap, flip,
I do the splits as the song ends,
Feeling the familiar rush,
Knowing I stand out without,
Smiles and sparkles.
