Always Second Best

Too many times I’ve been second best,
Always played and the same as all the rest,
Too many times the truth has hurt,
Upstaged by some pathetic flirt.

One day I will find the perfect guy,
His love I will not have to buy,
My desiring love he will never shun,
And no one else will be his number one.

But he hasn’t appeared it seems,
Only when I sleep he is in my dreams,
So I continue being tossed around,
Unable to put my feet on solid ground.

Here I am, just running in second place,
But in my head I can vaguely see his face,
Although I know he is waiting for me,
The players posses me; not letting me free.
