A Soldiers Life

by Ashley Redden   Jun 22, 2005

A soldier
Lays his head down tonight
First time in a while
That hes finally got time to rest
Even though
This might be the only rest he'll have
For the next couple days
He cant help but wonder
What his family's doing at home
He cant seem to get to sleep
So he gets out a pen and piece of paper
Begins his letter home
"Hey Hun
Just was laying here tonight
Cant seem to sleep
Cant seem to get you all off my mind
Not that you ever leave my thoughts
But tonights different
And I don't know why"
The letter went on
Of how much he missed em
How he couldn't wait
To see er pretty face
And hold er in his arms again
And have that long talk on the phone
With mom and dad
And play ball in the yard with the kids
The letter ended with
"Please keep in present prayers
Tell the kids I love em
And daddy will soon be home
Give em extra kisses for me
Every now and then
And tell mom and dad
Don't forget me
And love them to
But for now
I love you and
I gotta go"
Sealed with his kiss
And a tear
That stained the paper
And his heart cries inside
Wanting to be home so bad
He hears the call
To get up
To go at it again
A weeks gone by
Hes gotten letters
From mom dad wife and kids
But ain't no time to write back
Another week has passed
No a sign or word from him
The family cant help but wonder
If their soldier is okay
A week has gone by
And today
They finally received a short letter from em
Like always
It said
"I'm fine
Not to worry if i don't write much
Between resting when i get a chance
And running for shelter
Never got the chance to get back to y'all
And i love you all
And miss y'all way to much everyday
Be sure to tell the rest
And ill be home soon"
Days past again
Never heard nothing
From their soldier again
So now two weeks passed
Soon to come a month
As his wife lays awake
With her hand on his pillow
Wishing he was there
That way she knew he was okay
And that'd shed be okay
Wasn't but
A couple days pass
Not a letter in the mail from em
Like she always expected
Instead this morning
She woke
To a knock on the door
As the two leaders stand
That came to pick em up
That day he left
She stands there worried
With her heart pounding
A million thoughts fills her mind
And with all relief
She heard his voice from behind
As he stands there
All roughed up
With sand filled boots
And the look
On his face
And in his eyes
Saying that
"I'm no longer a hungry man
Of the real world out there anymore"
With then he starts to speak
"I'm home to stay
Ive stood my ground
Took my guard
Walked my miles
Fought this way
Through this life
And now Ive came home
To be a
Full time husband
And a dad"
They kissed and hugged
As they told each other
How lost they was
Without each other
Of all that went on
Its only half
Of A Soldiers Life
