Prison cell

by Gwen   Jun 26, 2005

As the court is called to order
and the jury now takes its place,
She looks up at the people
who will soon decide her fate.
The papers have had a field day
the headlines still flash inside my head,
"The madwoman who took a gun
and killed that youth in his own bed"....
The lawyer claims temporary insanity
the papers just call her mad,
But they don't know why she did it
or what made her oh so sad.
The judge orders the jury to listen
and to consider all the facts,
How this woman took another's life
and the remorse that she lacks.
But the jury finally gets a chance
to hear the story left untold,
Of why this woman took a gun
and how that night unfolds.
As she stands there looking round
hearing the lawyers talk about her life,
How she was a single mother of five
and the daughter that took her own life.
She explained how she struggled for 2years
to ease baby girl's torment and pain,
And how,if he was alive
she would do it all again,
She told them how 2yrs earlier
this boy tore her family apart,
How he raped her baby girl
and destroyed her lovely heart.
She told them about her baby's struggle
and about her battle with the knife,
She told them bout the cut that went too deep
on the night she took her life.
About coming home from work that night
and finding that locked door,
The pain, fear and terror she felt
upon seeing the lifeless body on the floor.
How she cradled her daughter's body
and felt her life drain away,
How she stayed like that for hours
cos she just couldn't walk away.
She remembered sitting there thinking
"this cannot be god's plan",
He does not take 15yr old little girls
and with this thought she ran.
She knew what she was doing
her plan was old but good,
She knew it wouldn't bring her baby back
but she'd taken all she could.
The gun felt odd inside her hand
as she looked into his eyes,
Then she pulled the trigger with an ease
that took even her by surprise.
The jury took no time at all
it was clearly "murder one",
The proof was there for all to see
her prints were on the gun.
And as the judge hands down his sentence
Life in a prison cell for one,
She looks across the crowded room
and sees her eldest son.
She tells him how much she loves him
and for him to remain strong,
"please explain to the baby as best you can
why his mummy S gone".
"Please be there for your brothers
and wipe away their tears,
For you are the strong one
wise beyond your years".
Please remember your sister and I with love
ignore the anger and the pain,
Give your brothers lots of love and hugs
until I can be with you again".
Many people judged her
as a woman who did not care,
But she was just a mother
driven by despair.
The bars that keep her prisoner
might be hell to you or me,
But in her mind she sees her daughter
and now her heart is free.
