Pete

As I put my pen to paper
strange thoughts invade my head,
Could you have known the meaning
in those last few words you said.
You said"although you won't be here
You know we'll meet somewhere,
And if it's bound to be in heaven
You"ll wait for us up there".
Did you know there and then
What you would eventually do?
And that those last few words you said
Would forever ring true.
It wasn't till that rainy day
And the knock upon my door,
That I truly came to understand
Your pain and inner war.
The tears flowed down his young face
And he slowly bowed his head,
The strength it must have taken
To tell us you were dead.
As I held his sobbing body
He reminded me of you,
A lonely, broken soul
Just trying to get through.
If only I could go back in time
I'd ease your torment and your pain,
But I know I can't
And the hurt and guilt remains.
We did the things you asked
And your memory's etched in time,
Strange how your last few words
Can still make me cry.
Twelve years have passed
Since that sad day,
And your goddaughter's been born since then,
And though she'll never take your place
It's like seeing you again.
I wish you could see her
She reminds me alot of you,
But then again,perhaps you can
And you can see my words are true
