Infinity, She Said

by Tearful Poet   Jul 7, 2005

'How's this for poetic?'
the blonde girl grumbles
as she rummages through her desk drawer
searching for her ticket out of here

Hot water pours out of the shower head
burning her skin
sending steam clouds billowing
from the top of the stall

Her nearly lifeless body
lies diagonal across the floor
she wears only a chain
holding a silver knot
a symbol that once ensured
her very breath

Deep red blood gushes from her wrists
the burning in her veins
hurts far less
than the break in her heart

She reaches for the necklace
tearing it from her flesh
breaking the clasp
that for so long held it safely
against her throat

Peering out through half-lidded eyes
she stares at the curved silver
wondering what it now means;
if it had ever meant anything at all

She feels herself leaving
and clutches tighter to her only possession
this, her last thought
is of her only love
the woman she said she would die for
always knowing she meant
the woman who would steal her last breath
"I love you to infinity"
for a fleeting moment
a smile crosses her lips

Silver infinity drops to the tiled floor
as the ambulance arrives too late

Yes, you're right on. The necklace was a gift; given with the promise of infinite love. The removal of it does symbolize the angry attempt to recover from the heartache, although unsuccessful. You did a very good job of analyzing my poem. Thank you for reading it in such an in-depth way. I hope that you enjoy the others!

Very powerful, rather feel that physical pain than one of heartache. It’s quite descriptive and metaphorical. Great poem, I too added you as one of my favs. I'm sure I'll learn something from you. The necklace I assume from her lover, of whom seems to have left her in some way, was a major part in this poem. I guess she wants to be over her but can't seem to, even now, let go being so uncertain of what to believe now. Uh, based on the lines:

    “She reaches for the necklace
    tearing it from her flesh…”
“ Peering out through half-lidded eyes
she stares at the curved silver
    wondering what it now means;
if it had ever meant anything at all”

I suppose silver infinity is the precious necklace of never fleeting love and it’s falling symbolizes the passing of the woman and/or the end or the beginning of the end for the lovers. Also the ambulance arriving too late could be her love coming back again but now in time or someone else tring to save her from her own destruction. I’m probably way off but I’d like to know what’s behind this poem…if you don’t mind explaining it.

”Silver infinity drops to the tiled floor
as the ambulance arrives too late”

Oh, thanks for the comment on my poem. It’s not a good poem but just wanted to get the point across to fight for what’s right and not with violence but with words of authority as well as not giving up. Love the poem. (sry this comment so large…never wrote so much on a comment page.) Looking forward to reading more of your work.

    Take care,
