Lingering Belief

by Brian n Josh   Aug 17, 2005

God looks down onto the world
Starting your life with a single birth
From that point on he follows you as you grow
His love warms us like a gentle hearth

All glory be given to the one held high
Our all powerful and merciful savior
He sacrificed his life for all of us
To make up for anguish and misbehavior

From the start of your memories
You were taught to love the Church
And make peace throughout
Using the Olive on the Perch

But all the while we watch
Glory being given to crosses held towards the sky
The light shines down on them
While the world burns and innocents die

Have faith for better
For those good shall be deemed
Pure by our guardians with wings
In heaven they shall gleam

Those who sin against the Holy
Shall be damned to hell
Where the unclean burn and suffer
At each stroke of the bell

But the Scriptures say otherwise
That the evil shall be cleaned
If they confess their sins
By God himself they shall be redeemed

Even if the evil never confess
They will still retain their soul
For the church does not realize
That there is always a loophole

No matter how they act on his behalf
God still loves his creations
So then why does he flood the world?
If we’re of his relation

And he flooded the world to rid of the damned
For the world itself had many sins it committed
But then why is the world not deluged today
Maybe sinning today is actually permitted

Thousands of years we fought for our God
Killing our brothers at our side
We all fought for the same king
One that always seemed to hide

Years we pray and remain unanswered
Our pain inside only grows deeper
We eventually lose ourselves
And only know the reaper

It feels like we are walking alone
Guidance no longer by our side
The world’s sins grew too much
So faith had to reside

There is too much resting
On something so small
When faith had more followers
It once stood so tall

Prayers come from people
For better they hope
As the world spirals downward
Out of reach of heavens rope

When we believe in damnation
We’re trapped in a cage we cannot breach
For death is a mystery
It’s James and the Giant Peach

To either Heaven or Hell
Based on our deeds
The Church refuses to answer
They have indulged themselves in greed

But when Heaven no longer exists
And our soul is free to roam
No longer must we fight to breath
We can let ourselves moan

All men were created
In an equal manner we claim
So why does the pope and clergy
Receive all the fame?

God’s love is equal
But to Christians this is not true
If you have sinned once
To hell they shall send you

The world will always suffer
People will always die
But somehow we believe if our faith is strong
Then God will let us fly

Religion is the chains on our feet
Holding us to the ground
Only if we abolish our faith
Shall we be able to freely bound

As our beliefs wash away
So do our fears
Happiness will find you
For all your remaining years

I say these things from past experiences
God himself has shown little heed
By myself I have proven
That he I no longer need

And it would seem
From what I perceive
That God does not exist
Then, why

Oh, why

Do I still believe?
