Lessons

The thunder of society,
with all it's little monkeys
running to get out of the rain,
stands still as a cat.
A cat that is watching
as humans rush around in $50 jeans
saying words like "shat"
and spreading around false gossip
about some meaningless person named pat,
or teasing a helpless child
about being lazy and fat.
No one ever has the time
to watch as a leaf turns orange
and falls to the soft, trodden-on earth.
Everyone's too concerned
with creating a fire out of their lives
to observe a sunrise
and watch as the sky turns light blue.
People just don't realize what's really important
until they are about to die.
But an old, senile man sat down
to watch a bit of television
and as he thought back on his youth
he grabbed a pencil and paper
to write about
what should be cherished
so that the next generations to come
won't be as ignorant and blind
as he once was.
