Secure Storage

by David   Oct 23, 2005

Creaking door gives way
to memories trapped beneath
Rotten socks
and love letters from secret admirers
My arm is sucked in
to the vacuum of another universe
Bright folders and snapping binders cover the ground
Creatures to devour you
and turn your backpack into an archaeological exhibit
But vigilant biceps pull through
Loosening the one essential paper
Stuffing it carelessly into denim pockets
The beast is angered at its loss, spinning homework into chaos
Pencil-teeth snapping and gnashing
Paperclip-fingers clawing and tearing
Yet I struggle back through the portal to steel safety
Pulsing fingers grope at the sharp metal edge
As i break free into the linoleum hallway.
Shrapnel is deflected by the door, inching shut
Finally, panting, I slide the lock into place.
Having completed this Herculean task
I sigh, walking to class unscathed
Only to find the wrong paper in my sweaty hands!
