Lady of the Night

by Brad Champagne   Nov 9, 2005

//This is the first in a series of poems//

Across the field I saw her standing, covered in a veil;
Her lambent eyes turned toward the stars above.
The full moon shone, and suddenly a gentle breeze arose
From calm to twirl the leaves around her form.

Then suddenly a sheet was seen upon the wind. The sail
Now floated careless off like a dove.
She turned that face so soft, sublime, as lightly it did glow,
Upon my place with such a gaze so warm.

Our eyes did meet and instantly I made my way to her,
And knelt and took her hand to offer a kiss;
A token of my love and service to the Queen I saw
Standing, enshrouded on this dismal moor.

She said in honey tones, "What stranger greets with such show, good sir?"
I spoke, "A simple servant such as this."
With a smile that the winters of the world it could thaw
She raised me as my loyalty I swore.

The smile melted from her face, yet still dwelt in her eyes
As into mine she delved to search my heart.
Well all was done and satisfied, she whistled quick and shrill
And her starlit mount slipped in from the dark.

Into saddle I help this dame, following quickly likewise,
As off for her home we did depart.
Through the nights our secret voyage a fortnight long and still,
Ending in a land of great remark.

As the palace we approached, a guard of forty men appeared
To escort their Lady inside the walls.
Soldiers young and brave they were, the best that yet I had seen.
I drank this in as the last leg we rode.

Once inside, those assembled there loud and long they cheered,
For their ruler's return to the Great Hall.
This we entered next afoot and it showed a golden sheen
Unmatched by any king's humble abode.

The entourage was dismissed as into my eyes she gaze.
After a time she softly spoke her word,
"My Lord, I see your heart is true, and I wish to ask you this:
Would you, sir, my King and husband be?"

Looking at this Lady so fair my love the more did blaze,
As I struggled to be so forward,
Saying, "My Lady, Queen, how could I such a love remiss?"
Holding her close I breathed, "For eternity."

The future can not be foretold, but the past will again be shown
As more of this tale has played out.
Until such a time I leave you what is as of yet known,
More you shall hear in time, without a doubt.
