Mending a Family

by Jacklyn   Nov 11, 2005

A familys birth of creativity
stitching at the seams
Starting with the women
every moment they seem free

It started before my grandma
even before her very own
Laughing at the stories
which these old ladies told

Never will I be like them
not the one with the creative touch
never venting my memories of cold
not in a quilt like they have told

They laugh knowing the truth
someday I'll join the group
like my mother who refused at first
she too now stitches and mends

Weddings, and a babys birth
Funerals and Christmas gifts
Broken hearts dwelling in misery
These women they sew for everything

It took One November breeze
To change the fate of sewing
"Honey we need to sit and talk
Cancer has your grandmas lungs"

From then on I joined the group
I sewed with her from day to day
making quilts of beauty and love
A present for her bright soul

Years have past since she went to rest
quilting went on, celebrating a great life
now trying to convince a future member
my very own stubborn daughter!

Your poems always captivate me in some way and bring back special memories ...especially this one. Everybody sews in my family. unlike this poem it didn't take much convincing for me to sew but my other siblings, that's a different story. however now, all of us know how to sew....5 bros. and my little sis. its a lot of fun...

once again, flawlessly written, so heartfelt and touching! never stop writing.

Oh this takes me back. I remember my Grandma trying to teach me to quilt. Of course I seemed to think there were better ways to occupy my time. Finally one day my Grandma and all of my aunts were sitting around a quilt laughing with my oldest cousin. That was the day I decided I wanted in. It's a memory I'll cherish always.
Wonderful poem, thanks for sharing it~Holly

Oh that is really sweet, a very nice poem. I liked the theme, how at first the narrative thought she would NEVER sew, then in the end she's trying to convince her daughter to!
Haha, a very warming family poem.
    Well done.
