He Can't Hurt Me

by Samantha Waits   Dec 29, 2005

The most popular girl in school
Honors student; homecoming queen.
But she can't cover up her problems
with an image of popularity.

She hides her fear behind her smile.
And covers the proof with trendy clothes
She can't call it home sweet home because
the hatred on his face is all that shows.

She goes home everyday
only to receive new bruises.
The beating lasts hours but really
it's her heart he abuses.

She decides she'll end it now
since he isn't home today.
She thinks she'll be better off
and her problems might go away.

She writes a short note
that she knows will be read,
sheds a few tears
and lays it on her bed.

A friend stops by to say "Happy Birthday,"
opens the door to the sound of a gun.
He's startled at the sudden noise, and races upstairs,
Scared to see what had been done.

There she lay, on her now stained floor.
His heart skips a beat as he spots the note.
He fights back the tears as hard as he can
but falls to his knees as he reads what she wrote:

"I couldn't take the beating.
The pain was to much to bear.
It'll be better after this shot,
Because he can't hurt me up there."
