Red lipstick on a coffee cup

by Shædow Poet   Jan 7, 2006

The small, insignificant hand
Slides down the protective glass
(leaving a line of condensation)
To her chagrin, it was quite vibrant.
Previously, wiped with Kleenex,
Her teeth sawed to dust, taking the order
That the drag-queen mother gave.

A cafe latte, cappuccino, and green tea
(Two cups, a pot and a wholly shaped glass)
Is a terrible order on its own,
Yet with two muffins, a chocolate cake
And a ham and cheese croissant.
10 minutes of life, wasted on the choleric
To make a $20 lunch order.

The fumes of milk are dull from reoccurance;
And the muffin's scent scrunches her nose
Burnt hand on the press, the money warms
As she gives the correct amount of change.
The lady's lips are tattooed an ugly red-
As she carries the tray piled with luxury.

Twice the amount of time the order took to make
Almost finished the 8 hours of unwanted labor
Piles of dishes to wash, when she notices
The red lipstick on a coffee cup.
The stain that won't be removed.
An image of a memory.
