God's Grace

by Poetvoices   Mar 21, 2006

Standing by a mighty wall.
Names I don't know at all
except for one I regret putting there.
All I'm able to do is stare.

Her little life had barely begun.
Her tender skin never felt the sun.
She was alive, something I know
now that it's too late. No place to go.

Every night I dream of going back in time.
Up upon the clouds to Heaven I climb.
Recite the prayer I say every night.
"God let me go back," but I wake up in the cold night.

Day after day, I return to the wall
wishing I hadn't killed her at all.
This time, I write my daughter, Grace, a letter,
of how if I'd had her, my life would be better.

"I'm sorry I let you go when I was young.
Back then, I thought I was having fun.
You could've been anything you wanted, I know,
but I cut your life short before you were full grown.
But you were alive, God showed me this.
Before, I just couldn't see how. Now I sit and clench my fists.
His Grace has opened my eyes, I see it now.
He's holding you there, and saving my house.
I can't wait to see you.
You're with him, I know it's true.
I can't wait to behold your young face,
and finally be with you, my God's holy Grace.
