Ode to a Jack-in-the-box

by Tink   Mar 27, 2006

In the darkness of a child's toy box
Is toy that will bring laughter and fright.
It's a freaky, scary, jack-in-the-box.
These kids don't share, but instead they will fright
For this hallow box that hides a clown head.
The music will play either slow or fast.
Around and around you spin the handle-
Out pops a head painted with colors of blue and red.
"One more time," they scream, "this time it'll be the last."
Creepy like in the dark, a burning candle.

This box with such strange markings
With eerie noises coming from inside.
A head pops out mysteriously laughing.
That will make a two-year-old run and hide
Black, green, white, red, pink, blue, yellow, gray
All these colors spring out when the song stops.
Creepy smile and mesmerizing eyes
Stare at you until you put it away.
It's such an odd and interesting box
That can come in just about any size.

Such a smile will creep a child out,
But still they try it, time and time again.
The nightmares that follow, I do not doubt.
Though they'll not admit it to any friends.
Hum 'long as it plays "Pop Goes the Weasel"
Just because it's such a catchy tune.
The kids just love the anticipation.
A jack-in-the-box will never be dull
Especially in the light of the moon.
With this toy you could have hours of fun.
