We never learned another way

by David   Mar 28, 2006

I wrote this for the writing contest regarding the topic of weapons. I did not know if this met the requirements, but here we go anyway.

Have you ever watched little children fight on the playground?
It always starts with name calling
Or a bad game of he says she says
And a barrage of insults
Then slowly it deteriorates into
Physical altercation
And that begins with pushing or poking
And slowly escalates into
All out war
Yet the greatest weapons they possess
Are the pudgy fists on the ends of their stout arms
And while I still do not want to believe that we live in a world
Where a child could find a reason to punch
I stood there and watched in silence
Because I wanted to believe that children did not yet know of
Weapons
And after the fight was ended by an unblinking teacher
All I wanted was to know, why?
Well it was today that I realized, we have not changed
I watched news coverage, on this very day,
Of the War in Iraq
And I thought to myself,
Why are we fighting this?
And I remembered, it was all about the arms
If I were to change the name of the USA to
George
And the name of Iraq to
Saddam
The plot would look like a fifth grade tale
Of playground combat
See, George heard that Saddam had some things that
He was not supposed to have
Like military hardware
And so George decided that he should take them
But no fifth grader should carry and M16
Or have the power to send planes stockpiled with explosives
To decimate a once striking city
Into shards and rubble from a comfortable couch
Five thousand miles away
These things we have spent countless hours developing
Do nothing but destroy
And the only things kids learn on the playground these days
Are how to use every weapon they have
In order to be more powerful
I wish I could tell them
That they do not have to listen to the people
Who tell them fighting is the only way to power and respect
And taught them that there was never a golden rule
But I think I have discovered the solution
You know how to stop a fight with little kids?
Pull the weaponry, the fists
Out of reach and use from one another

But what if we could do that
With the tale of combat from the swing set
Regarding George and Saddam
What if I could burn their death bringing machines
Like high power rifles
Bombardments of mortars
And vindication
Into the seventh ring of hell
And teach them how to hug instead
So they can go and kill each other with
Kindness
Because that is an armament,
I would be willing to let them have.
Then maybe we could find a weapon that actually leads to peace,
Like it is claimed weaponry will do.
Eventually.

You express alot of truth in this. It's amazing the way you convey your thoughts by taking them out of text, so to speak. Like making Iraq, Saddam and comparing the war to a playground fight....truly brilliant.

Uh-huh, you just said it. Exactly the way to peace. We should
Use kindness as a weapon and there’s no greater power than
That. But unfortunately that’s what people have completely
Forgotten about. so, I think at least the ones who knows this
Should bring it into action. I mean, they should use kindness
Instead of cruelty and love instead of hate. But these will be
Nothing more than some useless words if we don’t do as we
say. And it’s such a nice feeling. Ain’t it? Especially when
you’re kind to someone who has done sth bad to you.
Ahh, I gotta go. I feel like showing some kindness to
someone. NOW, who wants to be the victim? Come forth
or I shall come myself! My sword of kindness is bare waiting
to be used. Thanks for reminding me to use my sword.
    Take care,
    Marjan
P.S. you know, now I can hardly remember the words you
Used in your poem. maybe not even a word. But the feeling
it gave me, I still possess and for that I thank thee.
