I Didn't Know

Inside the safe walls of my classroom,
and beneath the haze of innocence,
that still clouded my mind;
I didn't know,
as I watched you leave.
The importance of that moment.

The intricate details of your departure...
they play over and over in my mind, but -
Only now do I realise their significance.

You walked,

along the corridor,
up the driveway,
through the school gates,
across the road,
pass the bus stop,
down the street,
around the corner,
and out of my life.

I couldn't follow you with my eyes, any longer,
but I had no idea that my heart had left with you.
I just couldn't understand, back then;
How much that moment would stay with me.
How often I'd replay our last seconds together.
How years later I'd still ache for it.
I didn't know.

    This poem reminds me of a high school crush I had for the longest time... besides that, I love how you word this poem. It shows how even after so many years, you still want to know what could have been. Thanks for sharing. :)

    Wow. This is a deeply emotional poem. It just got to me..you know those poems that you read and you feel like you could have writen yourself because they were your excact feelings at some point in time.
    I love the whole description in this. The reader can really visualise.
    My favourite part was:

    "I couldn't follow you with my eyes, any longer,
    but I had no idea that my heart had left with you."

    ^those lines are so beautiful..and so true. I LOVE the whole poem. Amazing work! =] keep it up.
