Time Tells All

by D C Edwards   May 24, 2006

This news is breaking
Break-breaking
History is in the making
On this September day
Time tells all
Tick-tick-tick-tick
Clocks like time bombs
Countdown to ground zero
One thought resonates
In the silence of the nation
Na-nation
Where is our superman?
And we find our hero
In mid transformation
Amid-st the madness

The calls comes to the station
like the crack of a whip
and it hits me in the chest
The disaster
incalculable
Two
two planes
Two
two buildings
Too many lives to let
Drift away in the jet fueled
Pillars of smoke
For nothing
I slides down the pole
Like some superhero
I pull on my costume
Jacket, overalls
Rubber boots
People don't see
My eyes beneath this helmet
They're shaking with my hands

This uniform hides my fear
Like an invisibility cloak
Hides the scared little kid
Because
Beneath two buildings
There's a little girl
alone
there's a little girl
alone
and I know
When I pull on the charred, broken limb
Of some god-forsaken child
And lift her from the rubble
Into the sunlight
As she takes a breath
I'll be the one who is lifted

Now that he has saved the day once again
We leave him
Our hero returns to his handicapped state
He is deaf and blind in his actions
he'll never see or hear the nation behind him
chanting his name
