What I've Been Waiting For

by Lyndsay Kalyta   Jun 28, 2006

I met you,
It was a quarter to ten
The sun was setting
Over the horizon
I was sitting peacefully
Enjoying the book that I read
But you interrupted
When you said,
"Good book?"
Kind of sarcastically
I looked up and saw
You looking at me
My heart jumped
No, it actually leapt
From its own place
Right out of my chest
And I closed my book
And laughed at you
And asked myself,
"Lyndsay, what are you trying to do?
Get him back?
You know it's not going to work
He doesn't want you anymore
No, don't try to flirt"
So I just sat there,
Listening to you
Talk and talk and talk
Like we used to do
I just wanted to say
"I love you
So much that it hurts
I just want us
To work"
But I held it all in
Because I finally was
Sitting alone with you
First time in two months
You're a great friend
The best that I've had
Even through the hard times,
The good and the bad
I sat there thinking of how
My life will turn out
Without you in it
I just wanted to shout
"Stay with me"
But I kept it all in
Because it felt so good
To see you grin
As you looked in my eyes
I felt a shiver of fear
Because you'll never say
The words I'm longing to hear
But that's okay
This is what I've been waiting for
To have our friendship back
And that means so much more
Than any kiss I could steal
From your lips
Any hug I could smuggle
With your hands on my hips
And I thank you now
For not slamming the door
And keeping me as your friend
Because this is what I've been waiting for
