Still that country gal

by Krissey   Jul 13, 2006

I had my silver hoop earrings in
A white handkerchief on my head
My sundress was lookin’ mighty pretty
I was eating some pork with cornbread

“Yes suh, that meal was mighty fine.”
I thanked my pa as I washed my plate.
“Could I go over to Jenny's house now?
I swear, I won't be home too late.”

Jenny and I would have nothin to do
We already stole catfish from the pond
We already ran through the fields yesterday
And I already re-highlighted her hair roots blonde

We might fix up a pot of jambalaya,
If we got hungry for a snack.
Or we could go out and watch her cows,
Huddle in masses of tan, white, and black.

There I was on Jenny’s tire swing
Her brother and a friend walked up the street
Whoever he was with that day
Surely could waltz a woman off her feet

All dressed up in khaki pants,
New Doc Martens on his feet.
Gel in his hair, a crisp shirt on his chest,
Made this city boy look complete.

“Well looks like we got a new fella
You don’t look like a man from here
Have you lost your way son?
Or did you want a taste of the Alabama beer”

“I'm just here for a visit.
I met your brother in school.
We stay in the same dorm,
And I thought he was pretty cool.”

Just a simple stare into his eyes
Led to a relationship of two years together
I can’t believe I’m now off to New York
I’ll miss Sweet Home Alabama’s weather

I traded my sundress for a coat,
Those New York winters are cold.
But nothing can freeze the love in my heart,
Or the diamond on my finger, resting in gold.

Even if he takes me out to dinner
And I have to wear a dress cut off at that legs
I’ll still want to be home in Alabama
Milking the cows and making bacon and eggs
