Drowned in Drunken Pity

by Krissey   Oct 14, 2006

When times were tough and he felt so alone
The bottle of vodka was his only friend
He held it close to his lips, never putting it down
Only wanting to drink until his life came to an end

The divorce was taking its toll by the day
Every shout was another beer
His best friend tried so hard to pray
But he blamed God for every single tear

He spent countless nights in a drunken stupor
Remembering nothing when he awoke
His eyes were blind when it came to the people he hurt
Nothing could make him realize life wasn't a joke

When the doctors said he had cancer
You think that would make him quit
But the bottles were bought more frequently
And he couldn’t help but take another hit

“Life” was merely four worthless letters
He had nothing to look forward to
Except staring down death eye to eye
He welcomed the thought of something new

He plans on traveling the globe his last year
Perhaps go to Vegas or Cancun
Wasting his money on some fancy car
Not realizing death can come very soon

He'd leave his ex-wife, he'd leave his son
Maybe their lives would be better that way
They wouldn't have to be scared to be at home
They wouldn't have to worry about every word they'd say

Not sure if heaven or hell awaits him
It’s weird how HOLY Toledo was his city
But instead of prayers to the Father upstairs
He just drowned himself in drunken pity

It's sad the way people so easily give up on life, the way when everything is going wrong they won't turn to God because they blame Him when we really have only ourselves to blame. But I understand the demon chasing theory. It gets the best of most people. Excellent!

Beautifully written. Powerful and heartfelt. Remember, things are not always as they appear. What looks like drunken pity to the outsider may well be the drowning of the demons that cling to ones soul. Sometimes the strength to shake those demons slips through ones fingers and all that is left is numbness to ease the pain that no one else sees.
