On The Edge

by Amy   Jul 18, 2006

Your love like cyanide burns my cracked lips
Droplets of arsenic that leak from my pores
And sink into the smothering poison fog
Rubbing hands against weary eyes
Black tears stain the faded lines of age

Swaying from side to side
My bare feet lingering over the edge
As I glance up at the provocative chemical clouds
Of fluorescent purple and green
Looking down into the busy traffic below
And the crowds of people who have stopped to stare

Tracing my hands out in front of me
I'm transfixed by the smokey wisps they leave behind
Throwing back my head to face the sinister haziness of toxin
I open my mouth so that I may feel the cheap thrill
Of the venomous sulfuric acid eating away my insides
I can feel the acid caress and manipulate my entire body
It incinerates the scars and bruises
Burning away the memories of a thousand screams

A shrill ear-piercing siren penetrates the passive atmosphere
Diverting my attention back to the street below
Where incandescent flashes of red burn my eyes
But the red lights are now gone
And all I see is white.

Amazing imagery in this one. I loved how you described everything so perfectly. All the adjectives you put into your poem, the words were chosen well. It gave it such a morbid image. The ending was perfect to, the signal of death. Good stuff.
