How Many Ancestors?

by Michael D Nalley   Nov 17, 2006

Thou hast a mother, and father
A mother, and father hast thee
Whence it comes to grandparents
Thou rarely hast less than three

If thy grandparents hast parents
What number of kin would be?
Considering great grandparents
Add greatly to the possibility

The farther back thou doest go
Titles, positions, and places
The more difficult it is to know,
Or match thine all to faces

Souls born, as bodies cease
In mortality none may deny
The number of entities increase
As parents must live, and die

Thus ending is really a beginning
Thine beginning starts with an end
For every spirit who is descending
One was initially meant to ascend

Mathematics is the subject
Not so hard to perceive
How doest a growing project,
Regress to Adam, and Eve?

Beautiful poem. I loved the language, and I love the ideas. It's true we all have ancestors, and it's very interesting to find out where we came from and who is our direct bloodline. Was my family of nobility to the thrown? Perhaps forgotten kings and queens lost in civil war? Inventors? .. I really enjoyed this poem. I love history, so thinking back to the past is something I do often. Nicely done.

I love this poem.. It was very thought provoking and so original. The flow and rhythm was perfect along with your word choice. My favorite part would have to be the last two lines. Great job on this! 5/5
