Born

by C Dodrill   Dec 25, 2006

Melting hot for the cold Christmas day,
poor boy born but the drummer boy won't play,
ask the mother what the saints would say,

the first gift he ever got was in the box,
think flowers; so think happy thoughts,
sweety glared but sweety never fought,

black birds flock, circle around the house,
poor birds could never tell north from the south,
living in the church, living hand to mouth,

the blind never understood evergreen,
redwoods can't grow from burnt poppy seeds,
the farmers left them all last Christmas eve,

sleep in the stars, sleep on the cement,
daddy made a killing but could never pay the rent,
what a child can't pretend,what a child can't get,

George can't tell a lie,but George can't tell the truth,
brother won't be home but he'll see him soon,
No Christmas dinner,Mommy burns spoons,

Born on Christmas
they never understood providence,
it's not how dogs can define success,

This poem Probably will not replace The Night Before Christmas. But if the cold reality of the poem forced the people who could make the changes by accepting the grace to come out of denial, the poem could be very effective. I can find no problem with the format you chose to deliver this thought provoking write.

Enjoyed this piece....actually might be better listed under the life & society section. Very thought provocing and clever.

sleep in the stars, sleep on the cement,
daddy made a killing but could never pay the rent,
    what a child can't pretend,what a child can't get,

"George can't tell a lie,but George can't tell the truth,
brother won't be home but he'll see him soon,
    No Christmas dinner,Mommy burns spoons,"

This part in particular is awesome!
