Blinding Lights

by Namida   Jan 18, 2007

The screech of wheels peeling out along the pavement,
frantically turning the steering wheel with no effect.

The impact is all a dream,
as the two cars collide against each other.

Smoke billows up from an engine,
but from which car she knows not.

Dipping in and out of consciousness,
lights slip through her eyelids.

The vehicles have stopped,
the airbag inflated.

A wetness trickles down her cheek,
yet she is almost unaware.

People are dashing around outside,
and soon sirens have engulfed her hearing.

Someone opens the door,
but her forehead is against the airbag,
her eyes are closed.

She opens her eyes,
just to slits,
street lights,
car lights,
ambulance lights,
lamp lights,
obstructing her vision
sensory overload.

The other driver is clambering out of his car,
sobbing, yet she is oblivious.

Someone tilts her back,
and is talking to her, though she is uncomprehending.

Carried out and placed on a stretcher,
she slips into cool unconsciousness,
life support beeping around her still figure,
chaos reigning beyond her body.
