This Could Be Any Girl [Reality]

by ephemera   Feb 6, 2007

Everyday she looks in the mirror
The reflection she greets in shame,
The scale reads one hundred, twenty-four
And she feels she is to blame.
She walks into the kitchen where her father sits
Her mother hands him the paper,
Silence reigns in this house
Yet they don't hear their screaming daughter.

She prepares herself a breakfast she won't eat
Today she won't make a mistake,
Carefully she applies the makeup to the marks
That line her willowy arms and legs.
Once she is ready she stands back to look
At the shadow that glowers in the glass,
She wants to destroy this hideous creature
It takes all her will to let the temptation pass.

The bus will come in a few minutes
Soon she must be out the door,
To the school where she is happy
And she is a shadow no more.
But her curse will soon take her over
As she turns the key and opens the door,
Her mother has locked herself in her room again
And her father lies in a drunken sleep on the floor.
