Ground Zero

by amoxi   Feb 19, 2007

It was 6:30 when I woke up that day.
I looked over to where my wife lay.
She looked so peaceful just lying there.
But I had to go to work there wasn't a moment to spare.

I got up and get dressed and was ready to go.
I was in a hurry but the traffic was slow.
I made it to work and we soon got a call.
It seemed that the first of the twin towers was going to fall.

I rounded up my squad and off we went.
To the site of the towers is where we were sent.
We got out of the truck and I sent them on their way.
We planned on saving some people today.

I got on my gear and started going for the building.
Looking up the sight was chilling.
As I walked up to the tower there was another bang.
Some one had hit the other tower just the same.

I ducked and covered my head from the debris.
But when I looked back up I could see.
People were jumping out windows and screaming for their lives.
Others were calling to see if their family was alright.

I walked into the lobby of tower number one.
Someone yelled "Everyone run!"
I ran out of the doors as fast as I could.
The tower started to fall just as they said it would.

Just as everyone got away the second tower fell.
This was the end, everyone could tell.
After all the debris had settled on the ground.
Everyone was quiet, there was no sound.

People started going to look through the rubble.
They knew there were hundreds in trouble.
We started digging and listening for people to yell.
There was a burning that we all could smell.

I told people to get back from the site.
I ordered them to run with all their might.
We got away just as a third tower had fallen.
Then all the sudden we heard someone calling.

I ran over to the rubble and started digging.
Hoping that this person was still living.
I finally dug down to where he was at.
The parametics came and carried him on his back.

He got to the hospital and they gave him good care.
I came and visited him while he was there.
He thanked me for saving him and told me I was his hero.
All because I had rescued him from ground zero.

"I got up and get dressed and was ready to got." it should say "I got up and got dressed" .. and im not sure but I thought that there were only two towers not three and you said the third tower. Nice work though the message in this was so sad especailly since a lot of people actually had to live through this and will continue to live with this the rest of their lives. Good job and very sweet message.

A beautfully penned poem. I'm sure we all remember that day well, due to it's awfully tragic circumstances. It nearly made me cry, reading your poem.

    Keep up the good work.
