Little Girl

She was only a little girl,
two little pigtails in her hair,
For such a sweet little thing,
For her, no one did care.

Her mother was always stoned,
Her father beat her everyday,
Running away seemed the only solution,
Running away, the only way.

She packed up the few things she had,
Some clothes, a brush, a teddy bear,
She didn't know where she was going,
She just had to get out of there,

She quickly opened the window,
As a pounding came at the door,
She knew it was her father,
Come to beat her once more.

She glanced back to see the lock,
was securely in place,
Then she grabbed her bag and leaped,
Tears running down her face.

She set off down the block,
Wind whipping in her hair,
Her soul lifted, freeing her mind,
Of every worry, every care.

She ran on into the night,
and only then did she rest,
It was just a park bench,
Definitely not the best.

Morning awoke her only to see,
A mans face inches from hers,
He led her to a police car,
She seemed at a loss for words.

He drove the little girl all the way home,
Or at least, it was her house,
There was only room for two,
Her mother and her spouse.

The door opened at the first knock,
And he mother drew her in,
Her arms closed tight around her,
And the girl gave in.

After the officer left,
Her mother closed the door.
Her father came in carrying a knife,
saying "You shouldn't live any more."

He hit the girl before stabbing her,
Then left her there to die,
As her blood slowly left her,
She started to cry.

"Oh God,"she said,
"What have a done?
To deserve this,
Be in this home"

Then her eyes closed,
as she said silent goodbyes.
Her last fleeting thought was,
"This day, I die"
