A Gramma's Poem

by Francine   Mar 19, 2007

I wrote this one for a friend, from her to her son. She wanted a poem to express to him how she felt. (2005)

So new to this world
Bright eyes look up at me
Tiny hands holding mine

I get lost in their naivety
Thinking back to you
When you looked up at me
With those innocent eyes too.

Wide eyes, in awe of life
You were filled with so much wonder
Always smiling and laughing
Never knowing the world could be so much trouble

Where did it all go?
The years have flown by
The innocence is lost
And I sometimes cry

I can't help but wonder
Where did my little boy go?
In my mind I understand
At some point you had to grow.

Is it time to let go?
My heart still holds on
What once was mine,
Is now long gone.
But to me you will always be,
Forever my little boy
I only wish you knew
How you fill my heart with joy.

And that my biggest fear
is that we've grown apart.
I look into your eyes
I try to reach your heart.

But sometimes you look past
Like you don't see me at all
I try to talk to you
I don;t want you to fall!

I only wish you'd see
I'm here for you each day
I'll stand by your side
And make sure you're OK.

But you do need to know
It is time to better yourself
Because these two small lives
Are relying on your help.

I come back to reality
Looking down at them
And I know that somehow
God hears all of my "amens"

I have faith, it will work out
You just need to find your way
And you'll look down at them
And understand the words I say.

You'll stand on your own
You'll stand tall and proud
You are a great father
I never had a doubt.

And you will see the beauty
In these little lives so small
And I have faith that you
Will give these lives your all.
