The Perfect Goal

by Keith   Sep 6, 2007

The perfect goal

In the midst and in the fear
Of one despondent draw
Chances coming
Charges and sieges upon the opposition goal
Continuing to rain down
Blocked at every route
under the clear blue sky
The frantic frustration
Painted on countless faces

Then,
Finally,
The breakthrough came

An opposition corner
Cleared.
Ball breaks lose
Picked up
Rolled into feet
Twisting and turning
Until head on
With the defence
Striding ahead
Surging forward
Past the despairing lunges
Of two defenders
Team-mates streaming through
Passed out wide
Played into the overlapping run
Darting into the box
Cross comes in
Curling into feet
Setting myself
For the flamboyant flick
Getting there
Before the 'keepers attempted catch
To send the ball rolling
Into the back of net
To send players, coaches, fans
Into a mood of delight and
Into a round polite applause
In appreciation
Of a perfect goal.
