And She Danced

by alone in the crowd   Nov 28, 2007

Bare feet scrape against slick asphalt
She smiles at the rain
As it washes the blue from her eyes
Diamond studs
Flawless
Colorless

Street lamps paint spotlights on her stage
And she danced
She danced with the water
Plastering strands of hair against her face
The porcelain parchment
On which his handwriting spoke

Mascara only blends with the black already beneath her eyes
Her lips
Painted with the blood of yesterday
Her dress
A second skin on her chest
Where her heart can only
Echo
And she danced

Down the street
Toward the tracks
The remembrance of him
Tattooed purple on her arm
A five-fingered star
Shining beneath the rain
Glossy with watercolors

The rails cold below her feet
Splinters dug into her heel and soul
She couldn't feel
But she could dance

And she danced
As the headlights grew brighter
Illuminated her like an angel
Speeding toward her
The whistle an opera
She felt the air pushed from her lungs
And still
She danced
