Charity Wristbands

You know all these charity wristbands that are circulating about, I was just wondering:

Who here wears any of the charity wristbands?

If you do, then do you actually know what they represent? the messages they are trying to get across?

It's just I know loads of people in my area that wear these bands, sometimes 10 to an arm, but have no idea what the original purpose of them was. I myself have one band, just the one may I add, supporting Breast Cancer Research.

What do you feel about these bands? are they just another fashion trend?

among a lot of youth, yes its a fashion trend...but they do know what they mean, obviously its written on the bracelet, but i do agree that they're worn mostly as a trend. i wear the livestrong and 2 different breast cancer bracelets.

I personally don't wear any, but most boys wear the black and white linked "Stand up Speak up" bands because they were advertised by footballers, so the craze came on from there. I know a few boys who wear them who are probably some of the most rasict people I know.

i have a livestrong one...and then i have one that says "the free remember" which is for supporting the troops in Iraq....and then i have one that says "give blood" self explanitory.....and then one that says "Music=Life".....

and yes they are now becoming more of a fashion thing more than supporting whatever the bracelet is for....

I have a breast cancer one, that's pink. And another one which is yellow and blue. It says 'Devoted To Life' on it --- I got that when I stopped self-harming. It kinda means something to me.

Hey, in my area, its getting more of a fashion statement.
I have 2 bands "Stand Up, Speak Up" (black and white one, joined together) and "Feel The Pulse" (red one).
I have always supported charities, i am doing whatever i can for these charities, thats why i wear the bands.

Is there one that promotes eating Bourbon biscuits?

    Dunk in Peace.

    I wear two bands.

The first one my blue one the "beat bullying" band. I have been really badly bullied and this band shows i care about it.

And the other one i wear is the "Make Poverty History" band. This band is probably the most important to me as This subject is something i care greatly about.
This band isn't a fashion accessory. It is a statement to tell people that you won't stand for the poverty that is happening all over the world. I could go on about all of it about what they do and stuff but to save time. PLEASE go onto

    www.makepovertyhistory.com

and sign up. Send a letter to tony blair. Wear a band. Try and make a difference! PLEASE lol. It will only take a minute or two.

So they are the two bands i wear lol. Not for fashion but because they are both thing i care about.

i really want to buy one of the bracelets that support breast cancer research, just because they're not so much of a fashion statement as the Livestrong one. and if i were to buy a Livestrong bracelet, it would be to donate the money, and i probably wouldnt wear it. because it has turned into a trend.

Yeh here people wear like 15 and they dont even know what there all for or even care why they buy them. Tis just a fashion statment amongst the "cool" people.

i only have one and its for breastcancer, i dont really wear it much as they were banned from my school, but to me it is about the charity not the fashion statement, although to most people it is all about the latest craze..

Yeh there banned from our school aswell because apparently people can write the answers to the GCSE's on them :$ dont see how that would work myself

"I probably wouldn't wear it. because it has turned into a trend."

Since when is it a bad thing that supporting other people turns into a trend?

These bracelets are helping so many people, weather they're for cancer research or tsunami relief, they shouldn't be shunned because they are a fashion trend.

i totally agree with u ^^.....just because its a "trend" doesnt mean that u have to go against it...

i know u bought one and gave ur money but u also need to show it physically too.....anyone can say that they bought one...but u need to show that ur proud to support the cause....

i know how u feel about the whole trends thing....i am one of the worst....i will totally go against trends....i may buy something when its "in style"...but i wear it a while later when its "not kool" anymore....

but this is one thing that u should wear no matter what....

these bracelets are all about supporting others...not going against others....think of it that way...

Actions speak louder than words.. or in this case rubber wrist bands.

You all know what I'm talking about, so I'll just pat Vix on the back and make my merry way down to my local charity shop and buy my weekly book.

vix- yes donating ur money and time is the best thing u can do....and im not saying that u HAVE to have physical support, BUT when ur not showing ur support because they are the new "trend", i think thats just dumb....

no u dont have to have the physical support, all u need is the fact that u know u have made a difference....but going against showing ur support to go against trends isnt the thing to do.....

yes if it was something like ur thing where u donate ur money and donate ur time thats awesome i applaud u for that....u dont necessarily need the physical support because people already see u doing ur share...so there is ur physical support there....

but i think we all do need to show some support, not just donating ur money....

i know that when i see people with them on im like "whoa kool i really want to support that, ill probably go donate money and get one".....see then when people see u supporting it....they will support it too.....so u get more people to support the foundation too......

  • Court

i hate it when people have them on and dont even know what they stand for...

like tonight i saw someone that had one that said "make a difference" and i asked her what foundation it was for...and she said "idk i just wear it".....so i dont know if its for like the AIDS foundation or cancer or global warming or whatever...i really hate when they dont even know what their "supporting", that really bothers me...

How is "showing" support more important than GIVING support?

Sod the wristbands, get out there and DO.

I didn't read any of the posts....only your first one Nici. I think to some of the younger people they are just trends. Kind of like those other bracelets they wrapped together and had people pop when they did something sexual. But my sister and I (though I don't wear them) buy them. I donate to just about every thing they put in front of me so I'll buy them for my sister and her daughter. She wears hers and gets very excited about them. I have a cousin who has like 15 of them and if you asked him what each one meant he couldn't tell you. He's gets them because he says they're "cool" I know people with kids in the Marines and they wear every support our troops one they have. They have meaning to some and it's just fashion trends to others. Whether they know what they mean or not I think it's an awesome idea though knowingly buying them for the cause is so much better.

Perhaps these bracelets will lead to bigger things.

Vix, its so awesome that you'd donate your time and money toward helping charities but so many people don't.

These bracelets are helping everyday people become involved in charity causes.

Those new bracelets that they sell with slogans like "Babe" and "Hottie" on them are just making the whole thing seem cheap. Replicating charity bracelets to support a trend, the people who make them should be shot. Survivors shot again.

Anyways, who knows what could be next?

  • Natalie84

Oh babybe I have not heard of those. That's horrible. They’re just making a mockery out of something so awesome. Each and every one of those charity bands has such a special mission. I think it's incredibly idiotic to make Hot and Babe bands....and I agree they should be shot.

  • chelle

i think that it has become a trend but a rather beneficial one at that...this is a trend that shows just how many people care and support whatever the case may be.

Support is Support no matter what form it is given in!! Doing Something is better than doing Nothing!!

    i have got three:

    * a pink one for Breast cancer Awareness
    * a red white and blue tie-dye one that says "Freedom" on it...(self-explanatory)
    * and a red one that says "Love Builds" for Ronald McDonald foundation

  • Carlee Ann

I actually have one that says, "I'll Wait"... it's a chasity band.

I have one for AIDS, one for D.A.R.E, one for Breast Cancer, and one for Muscular Dystrophy...

I also have a religious one that says "I am Forgiven"... I wear that one a lot, along with the chasity one...

It is a trend, but there are many people that wear them for the cause. And actually, it's a good thing they are a trend... more money for the charities.

    Have a fabulous day!
