Between you and me

by Karla   Jan 17, 2013

Inside my blood, Pluto freezes
with such a violence before
November as if I could be what
the constellations whispered.

But I laid my doubts in this world
as soon as she cut my umbilical cord
with her teeth, thinking peace
could echo through both of us.

I - an unavoidable wreckage
after another attempt.
(I could never be your salvation;
who promised you my scalp?)

And as we grow old and wild
into the woods, we stare each other,
searching for that lost magnificence
we have never had

like two victims of the stars,
every word touches us
as we expire outwards our love
and hate on each other's faces.

What Karla does well with this poem is the fantastic indulgence of imagery. There is so much going on that you have to read this 2 or 3 times to really stand any chance of understanding what she is saying. I think the potential double reference of pluto is very clever. There is real darkness throughout this piece, 'freezing blood' and the biting of the umbilical cord. What really stands out for me is the conflict throughout. Is it a love poem? Not sure when even in the final stanza hate rears its ugly head. Great Write Karla.

I adore your poetry, Karla. It is hard to comment, analyse/interpret and each line that comes next is unexpected yet you always tie them together beautifully. I've always thought you write one of the best endings, but not so that I'd skip to it as every thing you write is always interesting and creative. Very inspiring.
