First Day Of School [English Sonnet]

by Everlasting   Dec 10, 2016

Mother said "the sun will come, open eyes"
as white curtains sang a tune of clish-clash
"hurry up, you sting go make the bath cry"
let his tears disinfect you in a splash

"don't forget to make the sponge really mad"
so she can combat the germs on your pores
Remember to wash behind your back, Shad.
and whatever you do keep track of scores.

"This fight you will lose for the bath's own sake
he can't cry all day, give him a short joy
Now the sun arrived greet with a handshake
it's time for you to become a schoolboy

if not you'll tussle forever at home
or you shall go to class and duel tomes.

I am laughing here. As I was reading, I was thinking, this iambic meter is terrible. Then I read the footnote and smiled. I wrote a sonnet series a few years back - the only reason I haven't deleted it, is I want to see my progress. I didn't even know how to recognise syllables, let alone arranging them into any musical beat.

Thank you for sharing, it is good to know that an excellent sonnet writer such as yourself came from meager beginnings.

    Take care,

First day of school is a nightmare for some and parents have a tougher time letting go then the kids! Good job with the sonnet.
