A letter to the loud girls

by Yakari Gabriel   Jan 2, 2017

It took me years to make peace
with always being the elephant
in the room both literally and figuratively.

So trust me,
I write for the big girls,
for the loud ones,
the ones who have mothers
that fear no man is gonna want their daughters.

For the girls who dream
more than what is allowed,
the ones who don't care about roses

I write to immortalize
our existence through poetry
Because we're never called soft,
we're never called vulnerable

The ones who only know resistance,
only know fighting, only know being strong,
because people always trying to turn our volume down...
always telling us to try to slim down, sit down, dim the light

Don't listen.

let this be the year of saying no
and letting go of anyone
who is bothered by your fire
Don't you ever dare cool off baby
We may be too much, but plenty
of those that come for us,
don't even come close to being enough

Yakari, this is yet another fantastic, though provoking write and the title intrigued me as I wondered why write for 'loud girls' because surely they can speak for themselves, right?

1/ This is a deep and powerful opening which seems to answer my question of why you would write for the loud girls and it's because their mothers fear nobody will want them but why??

2/ We can all dream but yes, some more than others though I feel no one should be told they are dreaming too big because dreams are what we make them and some are achievable.

3/ Just because people have a 'loud' personality does not mean they aren't 'soft' or 'vulnerable' because I feel these kinds of people are the most vulnerable to heartache and bullying.

4/ Now, I realise that 'loud' is for the larger woman and you know what we should be ourselves no matter what anybody tells us to say, do, think or feel...

    Don't listen.
    ^^
Yes, yes, yes do not listen to negativity.

    5/ Powerful stuff, loved it.

Great piece! No one should ever be told that they can't be themselves. I really enjoyed reading this because so many people go around unhappy trying to be someone they aren't just because society or family deems them unacceptable or different. Love yourself for who you are and not how others think you should be.
