Rainbow in the Clouds

People have asked me:
Why should we care?
Why should we love?
Why should we be concerned
About the safety of others?

I think back to when I did my last giveaway for the homeless in September, before I went on a long hiatus. There was this one woman, roughly mid 60s, who came to us with her friend, since she heard about our monthly giveaways through word of mouth from other people we helped. She came with one of those reusable bags that were used for grocery shopping. She came to me asking if we had any clothing for children.

Surprisingly, we did. We gave her lots of clothes for her and the children she needed clothing for. Eventually, she got so much clothes that her bag couldn't carry any more, so i offered her a 10 gallon plastic bag to carry the rest. Her friend started to head back to the camp that they were stationed in, and she was about to head out with the bag, but the bag was so big she couldn't carry it. I offered to carry it and walk down with her. She gladly accepted.

The camp where they lived was right by the 405 freeway, at the back of a Budweiser factory under a bridge where trains with large shipments travel.
As we walked from city street to dirt road, she was telling me about her life, the lives of those she met, and the people who have come to help her, including my organization. She said that what I was doing was different, in the respect that nobody offered to walk her home before.
All this clothing that she received from us will be dispersed between her, her friends, and her grandkids.

What I'm trying to say is to think of all of the rainbows you have in your clouds. Sure, you may have many things that cloud up your life, but remember that storms pass.

Think of all the people who got you to where you are today. Don't forget to thank them for everything that they've done for you, and prepare yourself to be a rainbow in somebody else's clouds.

A humble recommendation I have for all of you is to try to at least make one person's day better. At least one. It literally doesn't cost a cent to hug somebody, to tell them you love them, to tell them you cherish their existence. Believe me when I say that your rainbow will shine bright above their clouds.

The introductory stanza reminds me of a piece I wrote like 4 years ago. If I can dig it up I'll send it your way.

I like the way this tells a story and documents a moment in your life as well. I hope that you continue bringing kindness and sunshine to other people's lives. Prose worked well for this, but honestly I feel like your word choice could have been a little more potent.

I would like to comment that I'm fully aware that this isn't a poem per se, but rather a story I could not get across though any other means other than prose. I have here a link to the image of me with the lady whom I helped:
