The Kite Guy*

by Larry Chamberlin   Feb 14, 2018

Surrounded by refugees a boy sits
cutting diamond wings from Mylar
perhaps he flew here on such bits
when he fled from home in Myanmar

With razor and machete he could hate
turning toward persecutors to fight
yet these are his tools determining fate
for younger kids who get his kites.

Food is scarce and water is cherished
but plastic abounds in cast-off wrapping
bamboo grows fast - it does not perish
string comes off aid box strapping

He daily creates kites of hope to fly
for hundreds of children trapped here
this Bangladesh camp hears them cry
Fayes dreams wings that ease the fear

Fastens arms and legs of plastic strips
he gifts each kite with words of love
with simple words to ears from lips
and peace flies ever briefly high above

[There are over 60 million refugees around the world today. Some 13 million from Syria make up the lions share (which includes nearly 25% of Lebanon’s population. There are about a million Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh who have fled the ethnic cleansing of the Mayanmar military.
