Torture of the Mind

by BrownEyedBabe   Nov 20, 2018

Good morrow world
The sun is bright
No clouds to mar the sky
Blink but once
The light it flees
Darkness moves in with a cry
Close your eyes
Hold your breath
Plea for light once more
Sit in fear
Of all the demons
Darkness has in store
A little giggle
The loving face
Of a precious little soul
A tiny embrace
That's all it takes
To make your heart again feel whole
A light bulb blows
The coffee's cold
And dark creeps in once more
And now you sit
All but paralyzed
Staring at the door
The little smiles
The worried eyes
Of children, so soft, so sweet
"Mommy
Are you okay?
Please come play with me"
"Not right now
Baby, please go play
Just give mama a little time"
Instead they stay
They kiss your face
And once again you're fine
When the world's collapsed in darkness
Fearing you'll be forever stuck in night
The love and compassion of tiny souls
Is the brightest shining light
Until it's not

Depression is a terrible thing, It lives inside you like a second version of yourself and now and again takes control. This poem is very sad, it begins with those two words, (which I looked up the term, good morrow means good morning despite sorrow) It trundles down the path of huge desperate emotion. There is hope in the writing, as the children are mentioned and sometimes these can be the only thing that keeps us alive. Then the sucker punch at the end. A great piece, hard hitting and desperately sad. 10 points

A touching and bitter account of depression - something we can all relate to in some way. Congratulations! Your writing was brutal and chaotic in form, but soft in language.
